Well, I´ve had both the previous Pioneer (DV-868 here in Europe, twin of the American DV-59) and the SACD1000 for more than a year, side to side. Simply put, the SACD1000 is miles ahead of the 868 as a music machine. The SACD1000 sounds far more transparent, articulated, dynamic, etc. You hear more of everything (bass, highs, microdetails), more clearly (details, air), more deeply (soundstage) and more movingly (articulation, microdynamics). The Pio sounds veiled by a very thick curtain in comparison. I´ve used the SACD1000 for music, reserving the Pio for films (picture is very good through HDMI output). I understand the latest DV-79 (969 here in Europe) is a noticeable step forward soundwise, but honestly, it will have to leap from the previous machine sound to another dimension if it is going to be compared to the SACD1000.I suspect the Pio´s BB1738 dac + opamps configuration will never be as transparent and live as the SACD1000´s CS4397 + marrantz HDAM discrete output. The SACD1000 is simply a SA12S1 Marantz in sheep´s clothing. It was a bargain at 1999 $ (it is simply a shame that it has the problems we all know so well). If you go for the SA8260, you are basically getting the same DAC and analogue output as the SACD1000, so I guess you´ll like it. The Marantz SA-15 also uses the same DAC, so I guess it will have the same family sound, possibly more refined (later generation HDAM). Another option is the DV-9600, which has the latest top of the line Crystal dac (CS4398): I suspect it will not sound inferior to the SA-15. Another option to investigate: The new Consonance SACD 2.0 MkII (CS4398 dac), which seems promising and not expensive. A 15 kg machine for 1500 $!!
