Your caution is well advised. I'd like to add a bit of mechanical safety here. I try to wrap the tube in a thick cloth while gripping it. While the risk is small, I'd hate to break the glass while squeezing it. If you've ever cut yourself with glass, you'd understand why. Also a helpful tip if you are changing a hot tube and are impatient. Enjoy your addiction, er, I mean hobby.Nurse, where's my medication....!
