This is one of the best threads i have read yet. Lots of great ideas that all point to underlying paradigms. I too have found myself in a very similar position where i am always trying to make my system better. It's a disease that we all are helping to spread and one that i rather enjoy having. I have tried many of the usual tweeks (tubes, capacitors, cables, cords, balanced power supply, isolation, pre-amp vs no pre-amp etc ). C&C Abbys, with a slightly modified Almarro A205A MK11, Sony 595 CDP, Dodd Audio basic Pre-amp, various Zu interconnects and power cords, Cardas SE-15 cables, BPT 3 Ultra power supply. I can honestly say that every tweek i have tried has made a difference. The cryoed NOS GE input tube in the Almarro added an "ease". The NOS Amperex output tubes gave "detail". The V-caps are "dynamic". The Cardas speaker cables are more "extended" (highs and lows) than my home made anti-cable clones. The Zu stuff sounds...well "different" than the stock power cords. The Dodd Pre puts more "meat on the bones" but introduces a little noise. The BPT unit "sharpens the scalpel". But in the end I am still listening to a cd spinning in a Sony, feeding an Almarro and continuing out through the Abbys = music. I agree that every tweek makes a noticable difference and usually an improvement. But...I still think the 3 core components (4 if you use a separate DAC)are the fundamentals of your system. I have to agree with Russ that the source seems to have a very, very dramatic impact on sound . (I have zero experience with vinyl so please excuse my ignorance on that topic) I have tried a handful of different cd player/sources and each one has made a "HUGE" difference on my listening enjoyment. Some were absolutely un-listenable (My Samsung DVD/MP3/CPD) some like my former roomates dusty-old-unused-Panasonic-surround sound reciever-can opener-cd player was an absolute "laid-back" joy to listen to. IMHO i would have to say that the amp/speaker/source accounts for 90% of what you hear. Everything else =10%. (Discounting 1)room acoustics 2)noisy power supply, which i guess could make anything/everything sound bad). You can only sharpen a scalpel so much. Regards.
