its simple to experiment with the small tubes and a lot cheaper. However, once you have become familar with the tonal signatures of different types/brands of power tubes I have found that I most often go with changing out the power tubes first then fine tuning the sound with the small tubes. But, without any doubt, both types play a significant role and it is the untimate combination that will make the difference.
