I've found that the number of heat cycles can play an important role in tube break in, even if tubes are "burned in" by the vendor in the eval/matching process. I discovered this once when I let a new pair of 12AX7's run for a week before I started turning the pre-amp off. They continued to sound better as they went through ten or 12 more power cycles. I don't let power tubes run unattended for very long, and always turn my amps off - but it sure seems to me that this applies to power tubes too.I find that the basic character of a tube is fairly apparent when first installed but things become less grainy, veiled, and more smooth and transparent as the tube settles in. If I've had a tube in the circuit for 100 hours and 10 power cycles or more and don't like how it sounds, I put in another tube.
