Re: Tube Break In

My experience is mainly with 12a*7 types, 6SN7 types, and EL34 and KT88/6550 types. The small tubes generally settle down in 5 - 10 hours. I can generally tell what their character is within the first hour, but they do improve for a bit. The 6SN7 types take a bit longer, but again, I generally know what their character is within an hour or two and they are pretty well as good as they get by 20 or 25 hours of playing. The power tubes take a bit longer. Often 30 - 50 hours before they open up, but again, they generally show their general sound by 10 hours. Of course, YMMV.....100 hours seems a bit long. I guess my advice is, if you are rolling, give most non-output tubes 20 or so hours before you judge them. Power tubes, maybe 40 or 50 hours. Heck, if you change a resistor it often takes 5 or 10 hours to completely burn in.....
