Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |

What is the required amount of hours that a New Tube requires before it is considered Broken In. That is, when will the tube settle down and give it's true sound?I have heard that most tubes will come off 10% from their NOS Readings and during this process, some plate coatings burn off and the internal structure settles in.
OR does the sound you hear from the start give you a Very Good Idea of what this tube will do to the sound in your amp. After several hours the sound may change but very little therefore Burn In is not an issue.
Below are tube types I am interested in and what if anything I have heard or experienced myself:
KT88s - 100 hours required Shugang Smooth Plates...75 hours and little
6550s - ?
EL34s - ?
VT231s - Again 100+ hours for the Sylvania
6SN7s - 20 hours produced a change on the Sylvania Chrome Tops
6922s
6DJ8s
12AU/AX7sThanks!
