Designs are made on a desired axis. The targets can be met on that axis, or very closely. But all designs fall apart to one degree or another off-axis. That doesn't negate the overall design that should take the off-axis into account as well. But the first arrival FR is possibly the most important (some will debate this, I have no problem with that). If so, the time/phase characteristics on that design axis have much to do with the sound of the system. Were that not so, there wouldn't be nearly so much difference in the perception of various designs.dlr
