Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Absolutely. Just ask Richard Vadndersteen or Jim Thiel

I have Thiels and the theory of ensuring that each of the driver's sound arrives at your ears at the same time I have experienced in practice. It demands first order crossovers. Placement is very important. Imaging is spectacular. Soundstage is wide and deep. There is a transparency and accuracy that is extraordinary, if done right. Of course, getting it right and making the presentation musical is a challenge. i am actually swapping my Thiels for vandys, because they are less bright and more musical. They seem to have the strengths of the Thiels and none of their weaknesses.

Over the last two months I have auditioned quite a few speakers of all kinds. At first, i wanted a nice warm box speaker, but I realized that going from the Thiels required a step up and not a lateral one. There are number of time aligned, phase coherent speakers out there. Others here may have more to say on this subject.

Cheers,

Al
