Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: Does a loudspeaker's time coherence matter ?

The published research thus far suggests "no" but my personal feeling is that the jury is still out on this issue. I certainly would not limit a search to speakers that claim time and phase coherency but I find that I do like many speakers that make this claim: Dunlavys, Green Mountain Audio, Vandersteens, Meadowlarks and Theils. That list comes with numerous caveats as I don't like every speaker from any of the above (GMA comes very close) or even most speakers from some of them, the large Dunlavys perform best in large rooms, etc. I'm also a fan of many planar designs and some decidedly not time/phase coherent box speakers. I think all speakers are so flawed that no single criteria over rides the others.
Use your ears and keep and open mind. I find that people who "know" how good speakers should be designed are often the worst listeners as they "hear" with their preconceptions.
