Hiya,It is my opinion, through my experience, that any speaker can sound not right for you with the wrong amplification, source, and often, cables.
No offence, and no criticism intended at all, - but even though you feel that your Mapletree pre is a good one, - how do you know if you're going to achieve good system synergy with the Merlins, your source, your power amps, and your room?Even a great pair of speakers like the Merlins will not make for a good sounding system, - IMO, - with a $350 NAD amp.
It's all about synergy, and I've heard some very expensive and well regarded individual components sound pretty awful when mated with other well regarded components; they just don't have that gestalt.
That's why Bobby takes a system approach, I'd call him, or call Rich at Signature Sound, or go over to the Signature Sound forums here..
I may be giving you advice that is difficult to hear, - and it's just my opinion, - but people really have a tendency to de-emphasize the importance of amplification. They go through speaker after speaker after speaker, - not addressing the real issue, - which is system synergy. And although you have purchased incredibly flexible and well balanced, and cohesive speakers, mating them with the wrong amps and source and cables, - will invariably dissappoint.
If you're getting an overall thin sound from the ice amps and the Mapletree, - you may want to look at some Manley Mahis, or Manley Snappers used. Or, it could be your source, or, it could be your cables... Perhaps it's a cable issue... Describe your room...
Balance is key, and there are different ways to achieve system synergy...
