Second Pdl's suggestion on dick's picks number 3, a good "Betty Board" from '77. The best recording/performance for your prefered time period remains the "Live Dead" album from '69. A limited 10 disc box set of the whole live dead run is unfortunately all sold out, but there is a three disc compilation available (the one you mention), this is better than 2/11/69. Some of DP 16 was recorded at a slower tape speed than the rest and so is variable, overall the best early dicks picks is 2/13/70 (Dp 4) and then 5/2/70 (DP 8). For sound, it's hard to outdo "from the vault two" for 1968. "Steppin out- England '72" has better sound and playing than "ladies and gentleman" from '71. Avoid DP 22 (which was released mainly for its rarity among collectors). Your mention of DP 26 is a pretty good choice from '69 and I'd get "soundtrack to the Grateful Dead Movie, 1974" instead of DP 28. As mentioned DP 3 and 15 are the ones to get from '77. I prefer DP 29 over DP 10, and avoid DP 18 (Garcias guitar is distorted), if you want one from 78 get DP 25, and as they go DP 33 has good sound from 1976. Hope that covers it, glad to help.
