I would say that he was an extremely gifted saxophonist who fused raw talent with one hell of a lot of work. I would further say that he had incredible artistic aesthetic that translated well to his playing (and vice versa) MOST of the time... not always. His constant searching and chance-taking just doesn't lend itself to total control of his muse.
