Much as I dislike saying anything remotely positive about Mike K's absurd post, his terminology is not off base. It doesn't happen all that much anymore, but there used to be a lot of jam sessions at which jazz musicians competed against each other on the bandstand quite heatedly in what were called cutting contests. Some of these took on almost mythic proportions and are still discussed, although the participants are mostly gone. Mike K was obviously not using the words literally, since I don't believe those he mentioned ever engaged in such competition head-to-head with Coltrane. On the other hand he is full of s**t in his opinion of what might have happened.
