The numbers in the US for the first part of the year are low. Most weeks, the number one seller was below 100K. This is low.From my personal point of view, since Tower Records is gone, my own CD buying is down an order of magnitude. Last weekend I bought one CD, Arcade Fire, at a Circuit City. If it had Tower's selection, I probably would've bought a number of others.
It's a vicious circle. As local sellers of CDs disappear, people get out of the habit of buying CDs. For most people MP3s are good enough and the dirty little secret of life is that everything, with almost no exceptions, is available free on mp3.
That doesn't work for me, I don't think mp3s are good enough. But the market apparently does. And the market rules.
