Some of the original work was done with language, certain tongues utilize "formants" that are absent in others or structurally quite distinct, if you are not programmed to hear those formants through early exposure you may never be able to hear them the way a native speaker can. This was then extrapolated to suggest that specific musical tastes were language grounded in different cultures, explaining why stuff that sounds generally awful to one group may sound pleasant to another... this *neurologic window* model may explain why American or western kids, absent saturation exposure in a critical development window, may be permanently diminished in their capacity to be engaged in certain cultural experiences, as they might lose their capacity for language fluency... dim thought there, we have a technology that teaches kids how to be great gamers and multi-taskers who will never know the meaning of being immersed in an experience... a terrible loss... like collective mental retardation caused by an environmental toxin
