Unfortunatly, that's all subjective. When it comes down to it, we all hear things a little differently, and one man's audio nirvana is another man's hell. It's a classic tired argument, but when looking at things on paper, a $200 sony from wal-mart outperforms the best "reproducer" anyone has ever built from tubes on this board. Yet we don't buy that $200 junk, we build our own because it "sounds" better to us.
I agree, there is a distinction in build goal that we can define, low distortion versus a sound machine. To be honest though, I think the best of our efforts are a little of both. Few of us deliberately strive to create a distortion machine, but measure that awesome sounding, super life like amp you love, and you MAY be surprised.
This was more of a look at possible reasons why we may like the sound of a powersupply, that is anything but optimal.
