Some folks think adding a stage that is not necessary is poison. You could put a volume control in this design and leave out the preamp, thereby subtracting a stage or two that as no longer necessary.

The Aikido circuit has the virtue of delivering some drive current to the output tube, beyond what the 12ax7 or 6sl7 alone can do. Some folks thing that is a virtue, and worth having the extra stage in there to achieve.

I don't know much about the KT88 -- maybe it does not require much drive current. Lynn Olson has made the point that output tubes often need more drive current than is generally supposed.
