Cal,Since I just responded to a post about an 8417 equipped amp I guess they're on my mind. As these tubes are exquisitely sensitive - high transconductance for an output tube - you could easily put out 50W with three tubes. The two 8417s and either an 7247 (high and low mu triodes in same bottle) or 7199 (pentode and the same low mu triode in same bottle) - both 9 pin miniatures (this assumes SS rectification in the PS). The high mu triode/pentode would be the voltage amplifier and the low mu triode used in a split load PI. And designing around three stages of amplification would be fairly easy.
Of course, "first you have to buy the 8417s."
