It depends on the tube. G2 in an EL84/6BQ5 is tough. Depending on the anode voltage used, a piece of wire or a 100 Ohm resistor is fine for triode wiring. OTOH, g2 in a 6p15p-ev/SV83 is quite fragile. This case requires g2 to be tied to the plate by a 1 KOhm resistor, when triode wiring.

I'm not sure how much of a beating g2 in the 6BM8's pentode section can take. FWIW, I've never seen a design that used 6BM8s in ultralinear mode. That suggest fragility to me.
