..could have blown the tube up <Connecting all the grids together is not a problem - if you treat then as the signal grid with suitable bias to set a sane anode current - as it just 'converts' the tube into a low mu triode.
But if you connect all the grids together and then connect them to the anode through a small value R - as your original post (typo) suggested - then the anode current will go off the clock and the tube internals, especially the delicate signal grid, will turn rapidly to slag!
