My mcintosh amps are fixed bias as well as most class B amps.I like them very much..I really like your idea of using a battery on the grid and Im assuming your talking about hooking it up backwards for the neg bias?
THe reason I like the battery idea is a battery is the purest form of DC voltage you can get.You dont have to contend with a diode and ripple content and filter caps with relationship to the tube as far as the neg bias voltage source.Your coupling cap can still put the signal to the tube in at the grid and that will really sound nice.THe battery would last a very long time being it will probably have no more than a couple milliamps being pulled from it.
