Well, the "real" way to align azimuth is with a test tape and a scope. But for playing back tapes recorded on machines of dubious alignment I just use my ears. Listen to the high frequencies, even tape hiss, and tweak for maximum clarity. OTOH, some might call this a cavalier way to do transfers, and the alignment in the original machines might not have been too bad. But if it were me I think I'd give it a try.Don't forget the speed issue--I think the 5050b Otari's only came 7 1/2 and 15 ips (though with that handy extra quarter track head).
