FWIW we have been plowing through a fair number of RS1500s and a few MX-5050s lately. My impression thus far is that the RS1500 is an ever so slightly better sounding machine in terms of flutter. But man, these things are all over the place for condition. Based on our experience 75% of the ones advertised with "low hours" have shot heads and the other 25% have like new heads. So be careful to check that out if you are looking to buy one. The MX-5050 is more robust mechanically, though interestingly they seem to use a similar if not identical "soft" head. Other parts for the MX-5050 are far more easy to find than parts for an RS1500 as there are a zillion more MX-5050s around.I'd suggest that either one in good shape will do the job for you, as would an A77/B77 or one of the better Tascams in good shape. Mechanical condition is everything, so plan on getting the machine checked out by a knowledgeable tech.
