Hi, Riddler.The Otari MX5050B also has the 1/2 or 1/4 track option via a switch under the head cap. It's also a great and reliable deck. Those others you mentioned are great machines also.
Don't get rid of those tapes when you're done, though. You might need to revisit them if your CDs decay over time. I'd also use archival-grade CD media for your project.
I'm doing a similar project with tapes that my dad & I made in the years before he passed away. He was a semi-pro musician & singer.
The best way to ensure the survival of archival recordings is to make several recordings to CD, store them in different places (like send a few to relatives) and make a direct CD copy every few years just in case. Keeping the uncompressed wav files (or high bitrate mp3) on your hard drive is a good idea too.
