And now the deck don't work no more....It was the top motor, the one that runs the two central spindles. Sometimes it would just stop. Even in FF or Rew. Going along just fine, then it would die and not start again. Kick starting it by flicking the shaft would usually get things moving again. In an effort to find out what was really happening I put a multimeter across the motor terminals and when it was running there were 14volts and when it stopped there were still 14v until the control circuits stopped the current to the motor.
Unfortunately I managed to make the multimeter probes touch and there was a small spark and now the whole lot is dead, so I am hoping it is the motor that is totalled and if I replace that things should work again...
Ho hum. There is another 480 I might get tomorrow so maybe things will work out.
And the moral is: if it still kind of works, don't go making it worse still :-)
