Richard,Thanks ever so much for your help. It really is much appreciated. Honest! I just had another look at the 480. There are two big motors in it: the bottom one does the dual capstans, with a wide belt on it. This worked no problem. The top one doesn't have a belt on it, but its brass shaft turns a small belt on a wheel which then runs the splined shafts which go into the holes in a cassette. All I did was clean this motor shaft, belt and splined shafts of any grease/dirt etc.
The FF and Rew then worked, then didn't until I tapped the buttons abit harder, then the play button worked. The tape is running and the VU meters are moving, so now all I have to do is plug the whole thing into the hifi and see what it sounds like :-)
I'll also see what the record button light does next...
