Nak 480 arrived: how to fix it?

195.92.168.170

Hi everybody!,

The Nak 480 I got real cheap has arrived and I could do with some pointers as to what's up with it. Yes, I knew it wasn't working when I got it, I just like 480's and figured it could do as spares for the 581 anyway.... I have the owners manual *and* the service manual for a 480 as well.

What happens is this: if the play button is pressed the heads rise up then drop back down again quite quickly. If pause is pressed first, the heads rise up and stay risen. In both cases the capstans keep turning.

Neither FF nor Rew work, though I suspect if I get it to play, these will then work?

If pause is pressed, then Rec and Play, the capstans turn and the heads remain raised. When pause is released the heads drop down.

Soo, it seems to be the cam mechanism that is not working properly: it engages and turns, but then resets itself.

Both the play and pause blue lights work. I don't know if the Rec button has a light or not: if it does, that does not light up. I mention this because the 581 I have I had to replace the Stop bulb in order to make the deck work again...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't *need* the deck as I have a 581 and I don't play *that* many cassettes, but it would be nice to rescue a very clean, one owner from new Nak 480.

Cheers,
Fraser
