Re: Nak 480 arrived: how to fix it?

Hi, Fraser:

Beats me!

Sometimes, the little cams which sit right behind the push buttons get kind of quirky. The RED lamp for record should indeed light up when engaged. There are lots of little incandescent lamps behind the panel, many of which are mounted to boards. How are the belts doing inside the deck? Have you examined them yet?

I would start there.

BTW, I was very serious when I posted another note to offer up some of my existing stock of Nak 480's. I do not use them at all now and many are functional. I believe that I own four which do something besides light up. There are some which are duds, which are great for various parts.

I have way too many of these things laying about.

Let me know if you are at all interested.

I also have a dead MR-2 with original rack handles which I picked up recently. I have no idea what is wrong with the piece, but it looks pretty "minty" to me.

I do think highly of the 480, even though you have to realize that in the early eighties, this was an "entry-level" Nak 2-head deck!

Yet, it is quite capable of making incredible sounding tapes. I should know. I once mastered a recording on one, when my ReVox messed up during a live session.
