I am the worst kind of scientist, a social scientist, and even more troublesome a political scientist. I entire agree on the benefits of the scientific method, but I also know that operationalizing concepts into something we can measure ventures from perfect. We may have to forego some aspects of our concepts. I am likely you in that if I try it and it sounds good, I use it. But although I would like a good explanation, if one is lacking I chalk it up to insufficient theory. I have had too many instances were devices are ridiculed as baseless, but where I am confident the improvements are great.
