The Alesis DEQ230D is the digital version that allows both analog (balanced line in & out) and digital in & out. I ran my CD player from the digital out jack directly to the DEQ. I used the DA convertor in the DEQ to run to the preamp. Using the bypass button on the DEQ, it's DA convertor was very good - no loss in sound quality there.I think the issue is that once you start introducing equalization, there are some subtle effects that take place. This was most noticeable when the left and right channels were equalized individually. That produced the flattest response in the room but was hardest on the image. However, even using the same adjustments on both channels still affected other aspects of reproduction.
However, it was certainly an educational adventure for me and glad I went through the process even though I ended up where I started.
