In my case, I wasn't getting "bad" results with the DEQ. The frequency response did improve slightly, dependent on material. However, I found that it messed with the imaging or detail a bit and there was a slight loss in the sense of space or depth in some recordings. So, some recordings benefited from the slight improvement in the frequency response while others seemed to flatten a bit or lose some of their crystalline clarity.
My room acoustics weren't a particular problem to begin with, so I find it easier to live without the minor correction and maintain a higher level of image, detail and space. It is rather in the category of listening to the same live music group at two different venues. Same music, same musicians, but a slightly different experience. In my case, I don't think the extra component is worth it but I could see other scenarios or rooms where DEQ would be a Godsend.
