Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

OK.. Redbook is a fine standard...

but it was put together by an industry consortium..no? And was it the best that could have been derived at the time, or the best that these companies could come up with for different motivations ( other than pure profit ).

This is not a dig at Redbook specifically; more an understanding of how we get to the few standardss we do have. Another example that I can think of is 33&1/3 on an LP vs some other speed. I presume some common sence aspect of typical program material lenth and physical size of the storage medium (LP disc ) may dictate this ( probably a lame example,but..).

I do not know of any "governing body" or "agency" that is around to advance the state of the hobby as a whole. It appears we are pretty much at the mercy of whichever corporate alliance wants us to adopt their version vs. another corporate alliances version, and neither of the two may be the best for the audio enthusiest in the long run, but MAY serve only the adgenda of the resective corporations.

So, is there any such body or agency working on behalf of the the instry as a whole, including the consumer?? There must be a number of technical aspects that could use some standardization for the benifit of audio as a whole.
