Hi.Power amps , class A, B, C or D regardless, are the technology we need to acquire before we start to design & build one. Like driving a car, we need of get the license before we can drive, right?
Of course, class-D is 'something else' not so related to analogue audio devices we are dealing with day in day out.
Once these amps are designed & built, it is the sonic results we are
interested. Which is more influential? I believe it is the pre-amp which is the gateway for the incoming signals which should be amplified (if deemed necessary) to enough magnitude to drive the power amp properly.As I said, pre-amp, particularly phonostage, though simple to design superficailly, is not easy to get the sound right so that it would not affect the performance of the power amp to follow.
So it again comes back to the drawing board - what improvement in the design & installation layout of the preamp in order to affect
the power amp the least ?This is a subtile sonic issue which unfortunately current measurement topology in term of THD, IMD etc etc. can help very little if not at all.
