Hi.We should not get confused with the work involved to build a power amp vs building a linestage. It is obviously more tedeous to build a power amp than a linestage, considering the quantities of hardwares involved. But design is another story.
A lousy design in the front end (i.e. linestage) surely affects what follows it (i.e. powerstage).
A lousy designed/built linestage, say too much gain=too little headroom to handle signal surges, will not help any best designed/built power amp to perform properly.
For me, design of a really good sounding linestage is not as easy as one may expect. To be able to act like a piece of straight wire without minimum time dalay & distortion to the music signal is a big bigtime challenge.
I am yet to audition a really neutral sounding linestage, brandnames or DIYs, that really impresses me. A properly design-built passive linestage may be an answer as it would add miniumum THD, IMD & phase distortion to the music signals vs an active linestage.
