Re: Guitar / Keyboard noise in new facility

Here is some more interesting test results.

This evening I wired up a set of active pickups I have. They used to be installed in an SRV strat so I know they are functioning well. In fact, I used to switch out the Texas pickups because they were noisy in certain situations whereas the active EMG single coils were nice and clean. I always loved the clean sound from them.

So I have this set of pickups mounted to a separate pickgaurd. I walked around with them in my room for a bit to notice the changes.

When they were "off axis" with the unknown noise source they were dead quiet on all but the highest gain BUT when they were on axis they were just as noisy as the standard pickups.

The supply off the power line is right outside my window to the right. When I moved the pickups over that supply area it was noisy as might be expected. Interesting note, moving along the floor face down yielded much noise as well. My interpretation is that the supply to the rest of the building probably runs underneath my floor. There are two flourescent round bulbs in a standard incandescent outlet down there in the carport as well. The powerline supply runs down the outside of my wall at the extreme right of the apartment (about 7 feet from where I am sitting) down to the meters. From there I assume it is wired internally as I can't see any external wires. My gear is all mounted as far from the supply as possible as that is what I first suspected.

Another interesting result came when I waved the pickups along the other power supplies. Every piece of outlet wiring, outlet cable, wallwart transformer and gear made noise. That seems unusual to me, especially with the active pickups.

Anyone have an idea why this would be?
