That's an idea I hadn't thought of and is very ingenius.I gave it a try this afternoon with interesting results. I moved the UPS, preamps and guitars into another room. I situated the UPS about 20 ft from the gear so that the field would not create further noise like it does up close. Unfortunately, no amount of switching in or out with the mains off helped.
I attempted the same thing with an AM radio in the UPS but it's a little radio that I'm not familiar with. One thing I noticed was that if the UPS was unplugged from the wall (with mains power off) the noise got a little worse. I'm sure that's attributed to pulling the ground out from the supply.
Also, the direction the guitars were aiming did play a role in the severity of the noise. With the Drawmer (low gain) I was able to eliminate most of the noise using the humbucker settings. Single coils were noisy as ever. With the Rocktron both exhibited noise (due to the higher gain). The position that seemed to yield (in any room) the most noise is the guitar lying flat (on a table, bed or floor).
One thing that confuses me. If the noise was airborne shouldn't the pickup shielding that I did help? Or, shouldn't changing guitars or pickups (like active) help?
I'll try to get my hands on a battery powered radio over the weekend and try that test again.
