Re: Help! 200w Amp no louder than 40 Watt Amp!

Well...

I tried using the balanced outputs of my Mixer into the Samson Servo 550 and you are right, Old Audio Guy, there's a slight difference, a slight more powerful but still not much volume difference over the 50 watt Yamaha CA-610 II. It still baffles the hell out of me that such a wide difference in wattage rating on these units can be barely different in volume - don't get me wrong I still want quality for mastering and of course I wouldn't Master with the volumes full blast- but it would have been nice to have an all in one solution and have my set up fill in as powerful enough to monitor vocals with bands rehearsing.

I know that it's been noted here and elsewhere that the wattage is rated at 50 watts per channel on the Yamaha CA-610 II amp- but could the wattage be more than 50? I'm reading the back as I don't have the manual and it reads somewhere that it's 120v 300watts - which would make it 150 wpc - making it very comparable to the Samson Servo 550 Amp's 175 watts per channel. Could it be possible that it is louder than 50 watts per channel?

So... I"m back where I left off- with a $300 amp that sounds no louder than a $70 amp made back in the 1970's! I talked to some people at the music shop and they suggest speakers with a higher RMS rating- but I don't think that is going to help me if I'm still peaking at +2-4 db input signal on the Servo Amp. It still means I'm pushing the amp beyond it's limits if I'm clipping the amp. So with that known, can a higher RMS rated speaker be the solution? I'm thinking not? Please feel free to jump in.

So far after discussing my issue here - and a few other places - it seems that I need a more powerful amp with higher than 175 watts (say 250-300 watts) along with speakers to handle a continuous "RMS"/SIGNAL higher than 175 watts (possibly 300 watts or maybe 350 watts) to be sure not to blow the speakers out.

I did look for a rating on my speakers, but they give no such detail on them. No wattage. No RMS signal. Just frequency specs and 8 ohms. These are modified Marantz MK-6 II speakers with an audiophile's hand built transformers/tweeters added. I would most likely have to go back to him to find out any info on this.

At this point, it's late and I'm frustrated with a amp I wasted money on. I don't even know if it's worth all the trouble anymore just to get a few more decibles. I'm at the point of keeping the old Yamaha and getting it fixed with it's click on problem at this point.... i'm tired.... :^)

Any last comments?
