You seem to know enough to get yourself into a serious world of hurt.If your amp always put out a hum, even when all that was connected was the amp to the speaker, then your amp is malfunctioning. Ground lifting et al will do nothing for you.
You say that one of the big caps blew. Well, it sounds like it's been going for some time. This is one of your main filter caps. It's likely where the hum was coming from. This cap wasn't blocking all the AC, and the rails were being modulated by it.
Take your amp to a shop before you end up looking like Wile E. Coyote after the dynamite blows up in his face.
