I build speaker cabinets (professionally)and the JBL speakers you mentioned will unload quite easily in an un tuned box.This could be your distortion. You will have more control and be able to push the speaker harder is a 1-1.5 cuft. box tune to 70hz. Also a sealed box would be good also but you sacrifice output.
