Music servers and other computer based digital audio technologies.

I have no idea how I reached digital nirvana!

I want to help, but the problem is that I'm not sure what part of my digital system is responsible for the good sound I'm getting. Is it lossless files playing from my Mac? Is it the cheap USB connection to my dac? Is it my USB dac? Is it nonos in general? I have no clue. I can tell you what I have and I can tell you that it works really well. Well enough that my Teres (battery, lead shot platter, mylar belt, upgraded 300b and 103r cartridge) is getting dusty. Sacrilege I know.

I use a G4 ibook with external notebook hard drives. I use itunes to rip Apple lossless files. I send that via a cheap but short usb cable to a TwinDac Plus usb dac. The only thing that differs from most folks set up is the dac, so let me tell you about it. Although it uses a usb input (or coax if you want) but converts it into spdif inside. It uses something similar to a Tent clock. It uses stacked dacs and is nonos. The output stage uses resistors and transformers instead of tubes or opamps. It is littered with Black Gates and is powered completely by batteries.

So what have we learned? I already told you I have no clue! I think it is possible to get really good sound from a computer, I think it deserves the best dac you can throw at it, and I think nonos is the bees knees. So don't give up yet and don't think you need oversampling to achieve what you are looking for.
Have fun, Steve
