You could check out a Scott Nixon Tube DAC - supposed to offer pretty big bang for small money.I am impressed that the Bolder modded Art DI/O did not best your CD player. Are you ripping lossless? This is critical... Using an excellent SPDIF cable between the Squeezebox and the DAC? Using good cables from the DAC to the preamp - as good as what you have on the CD player?
I have a Bolder modded Squeezebox and SB power supply. You could spend the money that way - it would be considerably less - fewer cables and connections is also a plus - I would be surprised if you were not thrilled with the sound.
But it not be vinyl...
