I caught this thread late, so I'm not sure if anybody will respond. What do you mean "nobody has made a successful toroid output transformer"? Plitron seems to be very successful with their output toroids. Nice thing obviously about these transformers is that they have tremendous bandwidth. But I know of people happily using the Plitrons in their SET and PP designs.I agree, that its not common. Probably because they are difficult to wind, and so need a special winding machine. Also I suspect because tube amps are odd beasts, so there's not a lot of research going on here. The companies out there know how to wind and design EI types, and so are sticking with it.
