It is interesting to think of using a typical tube transformer's secondary windings only as an autoformer. This is the same thought process I went thru over a year ago. Simply connect the amp to the 16 ohm and Common terminals and the speakers to either the 4 ohm or 8 ohm tap and Common for an impedance factor of 2 or 4. The problem lies in the fact that the 16 ohm tap was never intended to be the primary. As a result there is a HUGE roll off of low frequency (-6dB/oct starting around 100Hz) when operating a typical transformer secondary as an autoformer. I know, I tried it. The secondary winding does not hold the 16 ohm impedance at low frequencies when used as an input.....to little wire is wound.Good idea, it almost worked!
