An autoformer has a single winding. Both input and output are taken from the same winding, but from different taps. The common Variac is an adjustable autoformer. There is no primary or secondary like a transformer. Since our amplifiers have no DC on the output, we don't need the DC isolation afforded by a transformer. This is where the sonic advantage begins. There's no gap. We can use it as a impedance matching device device and the turns can be kept to a minimum. The impedance ratio we need isn't much. We're trying to match perhaps an optimum 16 ohm load to 4 ohms. This is very different than matching a 5,000 ohms plate load to a 4 ohm speaker. I won't bore you with more theory. Almost any basic electronics book will have much more information on autoformers.
