I think your assumption about tractrix horns having no coloration is completely and totally wrong.BLH you can listen to much more off axis and they tend to fill the room and beyond. A much bigger sweet spot. And, they operate well below, in frequency, what any practical front horn will. As a generalization they operate from the lowest freq. up to say 250-400Hz. And. they add gain to the driver below the upper cutoff point. That is in the 20-300 hz range for example.
Front horns add gain from something like 150-200 hz up to where direct radiation from the driver takes over. They are more focused, and the sweet spot is more pronounced. They are also result in a higher sensitivity system in general. And, you need to do something below them, on the bottom.
