The Barbican Hall was originally designed as a conference room. It is therefore quite wide (and fan-shaped), but not particularly high or long. It also has highly absorbing / dispersing textured concrete walls. The shape and finish results in few early lateral reflections to the audience, and hence no ambience.About 5 years ago, some remedial work was done to add reflectors for both the stage and the audience. This has helped, but the fundamental drawbacks of the hall remain.
