I'm not sure whether one can generalise about live recording techniques. The shape of the hall, the position of the stage in relation to audience seating etc will differ from place to place. A technique used in one venue might not necessarily work in another. As I have never visiited the Barbican Centre, I cannot possibly know whether audience noise could be a problem unless the microphones are positioned close to the orchestra. It would be interesting to hear from someone who attends concerts there regularly.Obviously an interesing experiment would be for Tony Faulkner, or someone similar, to make a recording with the LSO present but when the Centre is otherwise empty. He would then have the luxury of being able to play around to obtain what he considers to be optimum microphone positioning -- and we would be able to assess whether it was worthwhile.
