Without exception, those who responded to my original post rallied to the defense of live recordings. It would appear that the live recordings I've heard have been unrepresentative of what a skilled engineer can achieve. And it is quite an achievement, isn't it--to capture space and detail while minimizing audience noise.TGR, thanks for citing the Tilson Thomas/SFS Mahler SACDs. These discs have garnered golden opinions from critics worldwide for both sonics and performance. I'm not sure why I didn't take them into account (the grey cells are not as cooperative as they used to be!!). It will be interesting to see how the engineers respond to the challenge of capturing the Eighth.
I suppose the moral of the story is: Try not to record in the Barbican!
