The longer answer is that the tape machine that we heard the master tapes played back on was a significantly different tape machine that the vintage tube machine that was used for the transfers, so it would have been what most A/B testing is anyway in my book, trying to nail Jello to the wall.And even if it had been the same deck (a Presto IIRC), there are two different stages of electronics involved in SACD creation and playback. The issue is not whether they are the same, the issue is, is the SACD the best available digital... .
My original comment was directed at people who assert that the SACD-only release is night and day better than the hybrid with a CD layer. With the two SACD discs I have, and the EMM gear, I don't hear it.
